Portland Marine Week 2007

Background

Welcome to Marine Week 2007

Marine Week 2007 celebrated the rich and extraordinary life of our coast and seas on Portland and along the Dorset coast.

The programme of events and activities was linked by the marine conservation theme.  The aim was to find out how we can look after our seas, and the importance of limiting our own impact upon them.

Marine Week is a Wildlife Trusts initiative. Each of the six Coastlink centres in Dorset offers its own programme of activities during the week. The centres come together for Seafest 2007, a free family festival and in 2007 it took place on the 18th and 19th August at the Chesil Beach Centre, Portland.

On Portland, the Chesil Beach Centre, the Portland Ranger Project, Island Volunteers for You (IVY) and a wide range of community partners joined forces to celebrate Portland’s marine heritage with events all over the Island.

Thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund award, most events on Portland were offered free or at a special reduced price. Equipment purchased with the award – cameras, plasma screen and audio equipment – will be a lasting legacy, bringing marine wildlife closer for future years.

Portland Marine Week 2007 was supported and organised by the following organisations:
